Internship Opportunities

Richard Steiner-Otoo ‘24 spent a week as an intern on a research vessel mapping the seafloor around Hawaii, an internship he discovered was available through Montclair State University’s Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation, a National Science Foundation-funded program. It’s just one of the opportunities he had while a student at Montclair. Steiner-Otoo also served as a White House intern in Washington, D.C., working in the Office of Public Engagement.

Located in one of the largest, most exciting metropolitan areas in the world, Montclair’s location – just 12 miles from New York City – provides countless opportunities for internships and hands-on experiences with local governments, businesses, nonprofits, schools and health-care organizations.

I'm not entirely sure if I imagined that my minor would lead to a career path. I definitely hoped that I would be able to keep Italian a big part of my life, because I'm so passionate about it. This is an Italian company that is a glasses, eyeglasses manufacturer.

Basically, I help with whatever tasks are needed, that can vary from putting acetate away in the cabinets that I organized, or packing up classes to send to the fashion houses, or to photographers. I've also helped choose colors for new collections. So the tasks vary, depending on what's going on, what's needed.

Learning a language isn't just a hobby. It's like you're changing your lifestyle. It's another way to communicate with people. And culture is so intertwined with that. When you learn how to talk in a different language, you're also learning about the culture of that language. Because they go hand in hand.
